The Script: A Lost Heart
A bored and jaded police officer comes to grip with her own lost heart when she loses her daughter.
Process:
A one-page play written in 30 minutes during lunch. Busy day and this is all I had time to write. But the thing is, I was really focused on it. Even though, this isn’t as polished as I like, because I know where to push this play more, it was good to put out and still have a heart.
Lessons:
– The types of plays I write are pretty indicative of the mood I’m in. Lately, I’ve been in a sort of funk, and the last couple of plays are definitely dark. Not as much comedy nor witty titles. But that’s fine for this challenge
– Realize where I can push things. In this story, I have a person bored with her job telling someone very coldly some bad news about a killed son. I wanted to explore to see this person finding her heart again in a Karmic set of circumstances, not so much as it is to hurt her, but to provide her with a lesson to be as sympathetic to the ones she’s calling. That said, the Sheriff from Miami is her mirror. Not bad premise for a 30 minute one-pager. But the lesson is that I recognize where I can push this pretty deep and dark subject.
