First thing when I pulled the envelope from the mailbox from The Actors Theatre of Louisville was think, “Awe. They’re so nice about sending rejection letters.” But when when I opened it up and read that Inay’s Wedding Dress was a finalist, I just kept screaming, OMG! Well, the non-acronym version. Actually, I just read the finalist part, screamed OMG about 587 times, and then I read the rest of the letter. And, it was personally signed! With like real ink and shit! Not real shit cuz the ink was blue and not brown like…
Yay! This is such a big deal and I’m so honored to even be a finalist. Funny thing was that a couple of weeks ago when the right to marry anyone was passed by the Supreme Court a couple of weeks ago, my first thought was about the play. “Well, shoot. I guess Inay’s ran its course.” Believe me, that’s a great thing, but now my play doesn’t have the stakes set high enough anymore because of that ruling. Even though I’m ecstatic about being in the top 55 of the selected plays, I’m not holding my breath for the actual prize. But, with that said, it is ALWAYS nice to be recognized for the work! I am filled with the great sense of validation for why I wrote the piece and to know that someone in Kentucky has read it is amazing on its own right.
Good times.
