Disconnected – Play 07

Posted on 08/11/2019 by Conrad

SETTING
A and B are sitting in a booth of a cafe as they are each working on their respective laptops.

A
No!

B
What happened now?

A
Jackson won POV!

B
Point of View?

A
No! The Power of Veto!

B
You still watch Big Brother.

A
I never stopped and now the entire season is ruined for me.

B
You’re supposed to be writing your paper.

A
I am.

B
Then why are you checking your twitter?

A
It’s called mult-tasking!

B
Well, then it’s your multi-tasking that’s one, ruined your watching of a stupid waste-of-time reality tv show, two, keeping you from finishing your paper and three, keeping me from finishing my paper.

A
It’s not a stupid waste of time.

B
You’re still a live watcher?

A
I’m called a live feeder.

B
I call you a person with a problem until you finish your paper.

A
Right. You’re right. That’s why we’re here. To finish our papers.

B
Thank you.

B goes back to typing which A sits there reading the screen…

A
NOOO!

B
You got to be kidding me.

A
That butt-head took himself off the block and is threatening Kat to put Nicole up with Cliff to force everyone to vote him out! This is crazy!

B
You’re crazy! You cried to me last night saying that you’re going to flunk out of school if you don’t rewrite the five papers you get D’s on, which is due in, lemme see, 5 hours, and you’re more worried about a couple of idiots who couldn’t give two flying figs about you or your collegiate future?!

A
You don’t have to get mad at me about it.

B
I’m being mad for you. Close the laptop.

A
What?

B
Close your laptop.

B closes the laptop with A doing the same.

B
Real talk.

A
Real talk.

B
What are you doing?

A
I was trying to rewrite a paper.

B
How many have you rewritten?

A
One.

B
One?

A
More like none…

B picks up his laptop and puts in his back.

A
Where are you going?

B
This energy isn’t working for me. I’ll see you tomorrow.

B stands up about to leave.

A
Why are you being so serious?

B
Because someone needs to.

A
I’m going to drop out.

B
Big surprise.

A
Wait what? Aren’t you going to talk me out of it?

B
I can’t. Not this time.
B, you are the most negative person I’ve ever met in my life. I thought you would change. I thought that you were someone else. I thought that, sure people go through rough times in their lives and nobody can be this negative all the time. So, thank you for proving me wrong.

A
Why haven’t you ever told me this?

B
Because I thought all you needed was a friend and I was hoping that friend could be me who turned you around. But all this for this long is truly draining, B. I wished to God that you weren’t like this.

A
Like what?

B
Someone who ruined what I thought friendship should be. How many times have you ever picked me up? When was the last time you asked how I was doing? Why are you so connected to your virtual friends more than to the one friend who has always been by your side?

You asked why I was mad at you. B, I’m more mad at myself for allowing you to take the life out of me… and I can’t… I won’t allow someone to have that power over me.

A
I didn’t know.

B
Maybe if you looked up from your phone long enough, you would have.
I truly hope you find something to be happy about.
I’m sorry it wasn’t me.

B exits.

BLACKOUT
