After a couple of attempts, I am OFFICIALLY a member of the @playgroundsf Writer’s Pool! I first applied in grad school, and when I didn’t get in, I was crushed. At that point, I questioned my value as a playwright. However… 1/
after getting my MFA (not that this SHOULD BE a measure of one’s worth!), I’ve been fortunate for all of the writing opps I’ve had: full-length productions, produced shorts around the country, opps to teach the craft of playwriting, and more than anything… 2/
had the chance to share plays on a stage and/or on Zoom from a Filipinx American POV. After many years of work, I finally found my own value as a Fil-Am Artist. But in the back of my head, I wondered, what’s one way I can I still grow as an artist? So, I put on my big boy… 3/
pants and again applied to a group that so many writers I admire had been a part of. I wouldn’t say that getting in validates who I am as a playwright though! More than anything, it again gives me the CHANCE to share a story with an audience on a stage I call home.
